Analysis of the San Francisco Earthquake, October 17, 1989, 5:04 PM; Epicenter:  Loma Prieta, California

Mundane Astrology:  Mundane astrology is the branch of astrology dealing with political events such as wars, disasters such as earthquakes, and events that affect society and history. In the Middle Ages mundane astrology was the study of “revolutions,” such as the revolutions of the Jupiter/Saturn cycles.  The Sun’s annual ingress into Aries was also known as a revolution.  Nick Campion (474) noted, “The three principle technical bases of the study of long periods in relation to Jupiter-Saturn are conjunctions, the casting of horoscopes for the Sun’s ingress into Aries, and the use of events, including predictable ones such as eclipses, and unpredictable ones such as comets or mock suns.  New and Full Moons and planetary transits provided further information about major events. The term mundane comes from the Latin word “mundus,” meaning “world.” “Mundus” itself is a translation from the Greek word kosmos, meaning “world-order.” By the seventeenth century the study of revolution was known as “Astrologia Munda” (Campion, 474).

The term “mundane astrology” came into regular use in the nineteenth century. Greek astrologer Claudius Ptolemy, in his book Tetrabiblos, codified rules for interpreting eclipses and ingresses, and these rules carry over to modern times. Charles E.O. Cater furthered the field of mundane astrology through the publication of his book An Introduction to Political Astrology.  Nicholas Campion’s The Book of World Horoscopes (1997) has also added to the field of modern mundane astrology.  Liz Greene applied Jungian concepts of the collective unconscious, developing an interpretive structure of the meaning of astrological configurations (Lewis, 476).

An earthquake is a vibratory shaking of the Earth, caused by a disturbance at varying depths of the Earth’s core.  The Earth’s crust is approximately 60 miles deep and broken up into 15 plates that are constantly moving.  Earthquake activity occurs when these plate edges rub, or get hung up and then suddenly release.  The San Andreas Fault was involved in both the 1906 and 1989 earthquakes.  Two plates moving in opposite directions periodically let go as the strain and pressure cause a breaking point (Longacre, 15).   Bob and Celeste Longacre (15) believe that there is a much deeper level to earthquakes than mere geology.  They believe that the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake brought up issues of rich and poor, and race relations/black and white, issues that are prevalent in Oakland, California, where the world series game was being played that day between the Oakland Athletics and the San Francisco Giants.

Edgar Cayce links earthquakes with the planet Mercury, or the god Hermes, Gaia’s original geomancer.  In the Loma Prieta earthquake, Mercury was squaring Neptune and making a closing square with Jupiter as well.  Bob and Celeste Longacre (30) noted that the two San Francisco earthquakes, the Anchorage, Alaska, quake of 1964, and the 1886 hurricane in Charleston, SC all had in common the presence of planets between 6 degrees and 10 degrees of the cardinal signs as well as a planet or planets from 6 degrees to 10 degrees of the mutable signs.

The Quake Chart Itself:  The year 1989 featured the triple conjunction of Uranus,  Saturn and Neptune.  This configuration combined the cycles of Saturn/Uranus (about once every 45 years), Saturn/Neptune (about once every 35 years), and Uranus/Neptune (once every 172 years). It is very unusual for all three of these planets to be conjunct.  A few weeks later the Berlin Wall would come down, an amazing change of history well represented by the archetypal energy of this triple conjunction that combined the energies of breakthrough (Uranus), dissolution of old structures (Neptune), and endings and re-structuring (Saturn).  This triple conjunction in the earth sign of Capricorn symbolizes shaking and destabilization of foundations.  While the earthquake shook the foundation of the Bay area and collapsed bridges, a few weeks later there would be a shaking and destabilization of a country’s long standing rigid policy and the Berlin Wall would come down and open East Germany to West Germany.

Fortunately the attention of much of San Francisco was on the historic World Series game in Oakland between Oakland and the SF Giants on October 17, 1989.  It was called “The Battle of the Bay,” and at that time kept many people off the road and minimized the death toll. Ray Grasse (14) wrote about synchronicity as it relates to mundane astrology.  It is significant that this earthquake occurred during this historic world series game.  In the earthquake chart, the ruler of the 5th house of recreation was located in the third house in the sign of Gemini.  The fact that so many people in the Bay area were either at the game or watching it on TV, made for many fewer people to be out on the roads than usual.  Certainly the pancaked freeway would have resulted in a  much higher death toll if it weren’t for the game.  The game between the two home Bay area teams was also significant, and perhaps the Gemini Moon well represents the two home teams.

Jupiter, Ceres, and Chiron were conjunct in Cancer; Uranus, Saturn, and Neptune were in Capricorn, the sign opposite Cancer.  Jupiter was within a one and two-degree orb of Neptune and Saturn respectively, and nine degrees from Uranus.  However, since Uranus, Saturn, and Neptune are all conjunct within 8 degrees at this time, they were all tied in to the oppositional energy.  Dissolving and changing structures and foundations; breakdown, dissolution, and breakthrough are key words for this conjunction in Capricorn.  While Saturn rules Capricorn and is comfortable and stable in that sign, Uranus is about change, and Neptune symbolizes dissolution; Uranus and Neptune are de-stabilizing energies in Capricorn.  In itself this triple conjunction is a sort of earthquake energy—shaking up the status quo—or shaking up old structures as with the Berlin Wall. Jupiter and Chiron in opposition amplified this de-stabilizing energy. A wide conjunction of Mercury and Mars squared the opposing conjunctions in Capricorn (Uranus/Saturn/Neptune/Vesta) and Cancer (Ceres/Jupiter/Chiron).  The 9 degree Mercury in Libra formed an exact T-square pattern with the 9 degree Neptune in Capricorn and the 10 degree Jupiter in Cancer, a tense energy pattern.  The mutable Moon and Venus opposition at 9 and 10 degrees of Gemini and Sagittarius respectively also tied into the 9 and 10 degree cardinal T-square.  Venus was inconjunct Jupiter and the Moon was inconjunct Neptune.  Venus was sextile and the Moon trine Mercury. The earthquake chart is pregnant with oppositions and tense energy patterns of expansion and contraction.

Mars, although in a waning conjunction 9 degrees away from Mercury was close (within two degrees) to the Mercury/Sun midpoint, and square Chiron which exactly squared the Sun/Mercury midpoint. One stand-out was the planet Pluto, the dwarf planet that symbolizes death, destruction and transformation, located in the 8th house.  In the Koch house system Scorpio is an intercepted sign in the 8th house.  Pluto resides there, symbolizing the hidden power of destruction of the earthquake lurking beneath the surface of the earth.

The asteroid Juno has been linked with atmospheric storms and was at 16 Libra opposite Mercury in the natal San Francisco chart.  Although one might argue that an earthquake is not an atmospheric storm, nonetheless it is a calamity of the phycial environment. On October 17, 1989, Juno was nearly at the same position, at 19 Libra conjunct Mars (the trigger) and conjunct Sun at 24 degrees.   The Sun is located in the 7th house, within two hours of sunset.  Valliere (33) hypothesized that the time of day of a volcano or earthquake is within two hours of the rising and setting of the Sun or Moon, illustrating this pattern.  It is noteworthy that the 1906 earthquake occurred within two hours of the rising of the Sun.

Lewis (212) reported that the closest thing to an “earthquake factor” that is reliable is a syzygy (an alignment of three celestial bodies in a straight line) involving the Earth, Sun, and the Moon. [1] Exact syzygies occur during eclipses, thus tying in the potent eclipse into earthquakes.  The gravitational force of the Sun and Moon along the same axis can set the stage for an earthquake to occur close after.  The distance of the Moon from Earth is also important. The gravitational force is greatest during a perigee, when the Moon is the closest to the Earth that it gets.  This was true in the case of the October 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. The combination of an eclipse with lunar perigee increases the likelihood of terrestrial upheaval.

Lara Owen (2005) analyzed the astrology of earthquakes and tsunamis.  She, in addition to Bob and Celeste Longacre (30), found in the charts she analyzed that 4-6 degrees of Capricorn was prominent; that all of the charts had mutable Moons, and that Uranus made hard aspects; and that the charts had planet and/or angles in Sagittarius, Capricorn, Pisces, and Cancer.  All of these principles also hold for the Loma Prieta Earthquake:  Uranus was at 1 degree Capricorn; the mid-point of the Uranus/Saturn conjunction and Uranus/Neptune were 4-5 Capricorn.  The Moon was in mutable Gemini, and Pisces was rising.

Barbara Hand Clow (13) noted the significance of the New Moon chart before an earthquake.  The September 29, 1989, New Moon was a 6 degrees Libra in exact conjunction with Mars, in exact square to Saturn and three degrees off the T-square of Jupiter/Saturn/Neptune.  The October 17 earthquake chart had stresses that were tighter than at the New Moon.  On October 17 the Moon was exactly opposing Venus.  Saturn moved closer to Neptune directly opposing Jupiter, and then Mercury moved into the tense T-square position in Libra.  Both the 1906 and 1989 quakes occurred when the T-square tension was set off by Mercury.  The days before the Full Moon appear to be tectonically stressed.  (Clow, 14).

Al Morrison (1989) commented on the quake chart two days after the event.  He noted that Andrew Bevan in Norway predicted this quake several months earlier and sent a letter to Morrison with the prediction in August 1989.  Efrein used his rectified USA chart for 2:52:10 AM July 4, 1776.  He noted that this USA chart relocated to Santa Cruz, California, the epicenter of the quake, had Neptune conjunct the Midheaven opposed to Jupiter at the IC.  Efrein’s relocated USA Ascendant in Santa Cruz was 17 Gemini, opposite the quake’s Mars.  He also noted the following aspects of the quake’s planets to this rectified USA chart:  quake North Node conjunct USA Midheaven; quake Ascendant opposite the USA Neptune; quake Moon conjunct the USA Uranus; and the quake Mars trine the USA Moon.

Lara Owen (2005) analyzed three major earthquakes that had accompanying tsunamis to see if there were similarities in their astrological charts:  the Lisbon earthquake of 1755; the Sumatra earthquake of 2004; and the Messina Earthquake of 1908.  Applying her findings to the Loma Prieta quake, the only similarity is the Loma Prieta’s mutable Moon in Gemini and mutable Ascendant in Pisces.  She found that Jupiter and Chiron were square in two of the three charts.  In the Loma Prieta quake chart Jupiter and Chiron are conjunct within a 6 degree orb.  While it was interesting to read her analysis of the similarities of these three quakes, only this one finding of the mutable Moon held for the Loma Prieta Quake.  Perhaps the combination of earthquake and tsumani distinguishes these findings; and of course, the Loma Prieta as only a quake of 6.9  magnitude, and did not trigger a tsunami.  More research would need to  be done on the common signatures of earthquakes than the three compared by Owen.  Teal’s (2009) analysis of eleven quakes is more substantive, and her findings held true for the Loma Prieta quake.

Aspects.  J.C. Maheshri (2008) analyzed the aspects of 100 earthquakes by magnitude and their occurrences with corresponding planetary positions using a simple linear regression technique. He found that when increasing numbers of aspects between outer planets from Mars on out, and the North and South nodes in multiples of 15 degrees occur, the probability of an earthquake is greater.  Thus, he found that the occurrence of oppositions, quincunxes, squares, and sometimes conjunctions between planters correlate with periods in which earthquakes are likely to occur, and that earthquakes are less likely to occur during periods of more trine and sextile aspects.  The Loma Prieta earthquake chart has a Saturn/Neptune conjunction 45 degrees from the North Node and 135 degrees from the South Node.

The Vedic Horoscope of the Loma Prieta Earthquake

The Vedic Horoscope for the Loma Prieta Earthquake has a destabilizing 28:54 sidereal Aquarius Ascendant (29 degrees considered de-stabilizing).  The planetary body Rahu (South Node) is on the Ascendant.  Rahu symbolizes exaggerations, wildness and unpredictability.  It is aspected by Saturn, the planet of destruction.  In the difficult 8th house exalted Mercury was conjunct Mars, showing a potential for powerful destruction.  And the dasha (determined by the Moon placement) for this moment was Rahu-Saturn, meaning that the potentially destructive energy of Rahu-Saturn was at play. The Moon was exalted in earth sign Taurus in the 4th house of home and family and foundations. Saturn aspected the Ascendant with Rahu there, and the 8th house Mercury and Mars.  Exaltation gives strength to a planet; in this case the strength showed itself in the earthquake. Mars aspected Saturn, as well as Mercury, with which it stands.  There is a lot at play in this chart between Rahu, Saturn, and Mars, planets of destruction.  These are fierce planetary configurations. The Ascendant Nakshatra is Purva Bhadra; pain, suffering, and injuries are associated with this Nakshatra.

The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake (April 18, 1906; 5:13 AM) and its correspondences:  We all know of the magnitude and impact on San Francisco of the 1906 earthquake.[2] There are interesting strong correlations between the horoscopes of the 1906 San Francisco and the 1989 Loma Prieta quakes.  Mercury and Neptune were in a cardinal square (Aries to Cancer) in the 1906 quake just as they were in 1989.  The Full Moon preceding the Loma Prieta quake was at 18  Aries/Libra. The 1906 earthquake chart had an Ascendant of 18 Aries.  On October 17, 1989, Mars was at 18 Libra, opposing the ascendant of  the 1906 chart.  Mars can be a trigger for events.  These two quakes were one Uranus cycle apart; also the 1989 quake’s Saturn was the 1906 quake’s Uranus. Uranus and Neptune were in exact opposition in 1906, while they were conjunct in 1989.  Saturn trines Neptune and sextiles Uranus in the 1906 chart.  In both horoscopes Uranus and Neptune were in tight cardinal aspect, with Saturn tied in with both.

San Francisco’s Horoscope:  The San Francisco horoscope that I have used for many years has an incorporation date of April 15, 1850 at 8:27 AM.  This San Francisco horoscope has Saturn at 12 degrees Aries, exactly fitting into the empty spot in the Loma Prieta Earthquake T-square, forming a Cardinal Grand Cross.  Amplifying this configuration is the stellium of six planets, five in addition to Saturn within 24 degrees, al in Aries except Venus at 6 Taurus.  The Loma Prieta Earthquake chart and the San Francisco city horoscope fit together hand-in-glove in a very potent Cardinal Grand Cross.  And with the multiple planets in each of these positions in the Grand Cross, it is an explosive energy!  Saturn and Mars are very closely squared in the chart, producing a strong energy dynamic in itself as a basic energy.

In contrast, Marc Penfield (32) utilizes a chart from a diary of a priest that indicated that San Francisco was founded June 27, 1776 at 11:00 AM when the first settlers arrived.  Penfield notes planetary stations aspecting its Sun and Jupiter for this chart on the day of the earthquake.

Penfield (32) noted that Oakland was founded May 16, 1850, and he rectified the time to 6:17 AM.  One could question this time of the founding of a city at 6:17 AM.  Penfield (32) notes that Santa Cruz, where the epicenter was founded on September 25, 1791, at 11:34 AM.  The transits on October 17, 1989, aspected Jupiter to a great degree, the ruler of its Ascendant.  Transiting Mars was opposite its progressed Midheaven, which was conjunct its natal Saturn and the Sun, and was squared by Uranus (Penfield, 32) .

Solar Arc Directions for San Francisco:  At the time of the Loma Prieta Earthquake, Solar Arc (SA) Saturn was 30 minutes from an exact trine with San Francisco’s natal Uranus; one degree and 20 minutes from a trine with the San Francisco Sun, and one degree, 20 minutes from the San Francisco I.C.  Solar Arc Mars was exactly inconjunct the SF Pluto.  Solar Arc Jupiter was exactly square the SF Pluto. Solar Arc Chiron, Neptune, and Moon were forming a cardinal T-square hooking into the SF Sun and Mercury sitting amidst the 6-planet Cardinal stellium. SA Pluto was 26 minutes in an exact applying inconjunct with natal Saturn.  SA Mars was within 4 minutes past an exact inconjunct with natal Pluto, an explosive combination being Mars and Pluto.  SA Jupiter was in an applying square 17 minutes from natal Pluto.  This tight SA Jupiter energy square to Pluto magnified the potency of the very tight explosive SA Mars inconjunct SA Pluto aspect.  Progressed Jupiter was 7 minutes from an exact applying inconjunct with natal Pluto, and 10 minutes waning from an exact trine with SA Jupiter, adding to the expansiveness and potency of the Jupiter energy. Progressed Mars was in an exact (1 minute applying) inconjunct with natal Venus, and in an exact waning trine to San Francisco’s 12th house Gemini Moon.

Progressions: The secondary progressed aspects include Progressed Moon conjuncts San Francisco’s natal Mars and square San Francisco’s Saturn.  Progressed Jupiter exactly inconjuncts the natal Pluto.  Progressed Venus opposed the natal Mercury and Sun.  Progressed Mars trines the natal 12th house Moon, though trines do not usually correlate as the triggers for such major happenings.

Transits: As just stated, the transiting T-square of Jupiter in Cancer, Mercury in Libra, and Saturn/Neptune/Uranus in Capricorn form a Grand Cross with the Sand Francisco chart’s Saturn, amplified by the natal Mars that squares the natal Saturn and is then conjuncted by the secondary progressed Moon and by the transiting Jupiter. Transiting Mars was opposite the Saturn/Mercury midpoint. Transiting Pluto is in exact trine to natal Mars, and transiting Jupiter is applying to conjunct the San Francisco natal Mars, and thus combines to form a trine with transiting Pluto that amplifies the natal Mars energy.  This potent trine energy pattern with Mars, Pluto, and Jupiter amplifies the explosive energy of the timing of the earthquake.  Jupiter/Pluto may also have brought some good fortune and luck in that there were few deaths in this earthquake, probably due to its timing with the world series.

In her research on earthquakes, Ann Parker (1996, 24) reported that the best technique she has found is the geodetic system.  The GE, or geodetic equivalent, is a house structure for any geographic location into which an astrologer can insert natal or progressed planets, eclipses, etc.  The cusps are determined by starting the Midheaven at Greenwich with 0 degrees Aries.  This technique gives San Francisco a longitude of 122 West.  San Francisco’s Geodetic Midheaven (360-122=238) is 28 Scorpio.  The Geodetic Ascendant for San Francisco is 9 degrees of Aquarius (Parker, 1996, 24). She found Mars and the geodetic angles to be in hard aspect to the eclipses.  Mars at 8 Virgo in the total lunar eclipse of August 16, 1989 inconjuncted the Geodetic Ascendant.  The August 30, 1989 Solar Eclipse Sun and Moon at 7 Virgo were inconjunct the Geodetic Midheaven. The January 26, 1990, Sun/Moon of the Solar Annular Eclipse was conjunct the Geodetic 7 Aquarius Ascendant within a 2-degree orb.

Parker (1996, 27) found in her research that Pluto, Mars, Uranus, and Sun/Moon were angular at least 45% of the time in eclipse charts.  Sun and Moon straddle the Midheaven/IC of the February 9, 1990 Total Lunar Eclipse chart.  Sun and Moon conjuncts the Midheaven of the Solar Eclipse chart of t January 26, 1990; and the Sun/Moon opposition straddles the Ascendant/Descendant of the August 16, 1989 Total Lunar Eclipse chart.

Ingresses:  The Sun Ingress chart for San Francisco on September 22, 1989, has Mars and Mercury and Sun conjunct, squaring Saturn and Neptune and Uranus in Capricorn, and Jupiter and Moon and Chiron in Cancer. The Cardinal T-square is prominent. Venus and Pluto are conjunct in Scorpio in the 8th house of transformation, death, and destruction.

I also looked at the charts for the ingress of Mars into Libra and Mercury into Libra just before the earthquake.  They both seemed significant, and amplified this same strong Cardinal energy of change. The Mars Ingress Chart of September 19 has Mars, Sun, and Mercury and Juno all conjunct the Libra Ascendant, and also in formation with the Cardinal T-square.  This Mars Ingress chart just before the earthquake is a very potent one.  In the Mars Ingress Chart the Moon is in the earth sign Taurus. Taurus represents ground/earth and the 8th house represents death, destruction and transformation;  these energies carry earthquake symbolism.

The Mercury Ingress Chart of October 10 again shows potent cardinal T-square energy with Ceres, Jupiter and Chiron conjunct the Ascendant in Cancer, opposing Neptune, Uranus and Saturn on the Descendant in Capricorn.

New and Full Moon Charts: The Full Moon chart four days earlier in San Francisco had an 8 degree Capricorn Ascendant, with Saturn exactly conjunct, and Neptune and Uranus close on each side. The New Moon chart for September 29, 1989, featured Mars together with the Sun and Moon all at 6 degrees of Libra. Capricorn was rising in that New Moon chart with Uranus, Saturn, and Neptune on the Ascendant. Again, the themes of 5-8 degrees cardinal shows up.

Eclipses:  Celeste Teal (1989) notes that earthquakes are caused by the action of eclipses, most often when the eclipses falls in fixed signs and especially where it falls on the Midheaven or IC. Ann Parker (1994, 6) studied the planetary patterns for 500 eclipses and 110 individual incidents of a .9 magnitude earthquake or volcanic eruption. In Phase I of her research, Parker found two  common factors:  1) that Mars was in hard aspect to an eclipse in 87% of the cases; and 2) that the Geodetic angles were conjunct, square, or opposed in 81% of the earthquake charts.  In Phase II of her research, Parker found:  1) Pluto appeared at the angle of an eclipse chart in 84% of the eclipse charts; Mars was angular in only 4% of the eclipses preceding an event; and 3) that Uranus was angular in 47% of the eclipses.  None of these factors bore out in the Loma Prieta earthquake; since Parker only used earthquakes of 9.0 or greater magnitude, perhaps these factors only correlate with earthquakes of greater magnitude.

The October 1989 earthquake was heralded by a total Lunar Eclipse August 16, 1989, in the fixed signs of Leo and Aquarius with Sun and Moon straddling the Ascendant/Descendant axis in San Francisco.  Jupiter in Cancer opposed the Saturn/Uranus midpoint in Capricorn, and within two to six degrees opposed the stellium of Uranus/Saturn/Neptune in Capricorn.  Mars at 8 Virgo made an exact trine to Saturn/Neptune of the Loma Prieta. The total Lunar Eclipse of August 16, 1989, preceding the earthquake was within 4 degrees of the Midheaven/I.C. axis of San Francisco’s horoscope. Transiting North Node at 23 Aquarius was within two degrees of the Lunar Eclipse of August 16, 1989, at 24 Aquarius.

Teal (2009) found that while there will be many aspects between planets at the time of a quake, in particular, planets will form numerous aspects to the previous eclipse.  She also found that the stimulation of the transiting Lunar Nodes to the previous eclipse is correlated with the occurrence of an earthquake.  She noted that this finding may make it possible to more accurately predict the possibility of an earthquake in the future.  At the time of the Loma Prieta quake the transiting North Node at 23 degrees of Aquarius was within two degrees of the August 16 Lunar Eclipse at 24 Aquarius. The 1906 San Francisco earthquake occurred at the time the transiting North Node was at 18 Leo, within two degrees of the previous Lunar Eclipse of February 9, 1906, at 20 degrees Leo.

The partial Solar Eclipse on August 30 was at 7 Virgo, making an exact trine to Saturn at 7 Capricorn.  Jupiter had moved to 5 Cancer, opposing the Uranus/Neptune Midpoint, with Saturn within a 2-degree orb. The Moon of the Loma Prieta chart at 9 Gemini squared the Partial Solar Eclipse of August 30 (7 Virgo). This eclipse is part of the 9 New South Saros Series, Julene Packer (43) noted, regarding the series delineated by Bernadette Brady (1992).  Brady notes about this series:

“This Saros Series appears to be concerned with the bringing to the surface of long-term worries about loved ones, health or issues to do with paperwork or communications. This could manifest as a worrying piece of news about a loved one or responsibilities with paperwork coming home to roost.  Any news will have a sense of destiny or fatedness about it.” (Brady, 1992, p. 215)

The Solar Annular Eclipse immediately following the earthquake was January 26, 1990.  This is an amazing eclipse chart with ten planetary bodies within a 60 degree arc framed by Mars at 28 Sagittarius and Vesta at 29 Aquarius, and with seven of these planets within a 30 degree arc of 7 Capricorn to 6 Aquarius. These seven are Uranus at 7 Capricorn, Mercury and Neptune exactly conjunct at 12 Capricorn, and Saturn at 18 and Venus at 24 degrees of Capricorn, and then Sun and Moon conjunct at 6 Aquarius.  North Node is 16 Aquarius. Chiron at 12 Cancer exactly opposes the Mercury/Neptune conjunction and Jupiter at 2 Cancer opposes the Mars/Uranus midpoint.  Jupiter opposite the Mars/Uranus midpoint symbolizes sudden explosive energy; the expansive maverick energy of the Jupiter/Chiron conjunction amplifies the intense energy of this stellium pf 10 planetary bodies.  Another feature of note is the number of Local Space Line contacts for this Solar Eclipse chart of January 26 for San Francisco:  Mercury and Neptune are strong; Saturn and Chiron are moderate and Uranus is weak.  This was a huge amount of energy vibrating in San Francisco correlating with this eclipse.

By the total Lunar Eclipse following on February 9, 1990, Mars was conjunct Uranus in Capricorn, one of six planets in Capricorn.  Mars and Uranus were located in the eighth house of the February 9 lunar eclipse chart for San Francisco. Pluto squared the Sun and Moon. The Moon of the Loma Prieta earthquake was conjunct the Ascendant of the total lunar eclipse chart of February 9, 1990.  The Loma Prieta Mercury squared the Uranus/Mars conjunction.  The Loma Prieta Mars at 18 Libra squared the Saturn/Venus conjunction at 20 Capricorn of the total lunar eclipse chart, and trines the Sun/North Node and sextiles the Moon/South Node.  In his discussion of the October 1, 1987, Los Angeles earthquake, Mark Lerner (3) noted that Venus was prominent.  Lerner noted that Venus is the Earth’s closest planetary neighbor, and that Venus is a planet to watch in earthquake charts. Denlinger (41) pointed out that there will likely be eclipse triggers between the event chart and the eclipse charts within six months before or after the event. There are a lot of powerful contacts between the Loma Prieta earthquake chart and the eclipse charts.  The connections in both Total Lunar Eclipse charts, that of August 16, 1989, and February 9, 1990 were very strong.

Summary: Researchers have found that eclipses play a major role in the mundane astrology, most often when eclipses fall in fixed signs and especially when they fall on the angles of the chart (Parker, 1994, 6).  Analysis of the Loma Prieta earthquake and its correlations to the Solar and Lunar Eclipses before and after the quake reveal many connections and symbolic meanings.  Stimulation of the transiting Lunar Nodes to the previous eclipse(s) figure prominently in quake, a factor that may make it possible to better predict future earthquakes (Teal, 2009). The transiting North Node of the Loma Prieta quake was at 23 Aquarius, within two degrees of the August 16 Lunar Eclipse at 24 Aquarius. Edgar Cayce linked earthquakes with the planet Mercury.  Indeed Mercury was a triggering planet in the Loma Prieta Earthquake, as the quake occurred just as Mercury opposed the Jupiter/Saturn midpoint and square Neptune/Saturn opposed Jupiter. Planets from 4 to 6 degrees Cardinal have shown to be significant in earthquakes (Owen, 2005).  Penfield 26) found the 4-5 degree Capricorn area to correlate with the Loma Prieta, as well as the San Francisco 1906 quake. The Loma Prieta quake had a cardinal T-square with planets near this range, and certainly midpoints in this range. Earthquakes have often been found to occur within two hours of sunrise or sunset (Valliere, 33); the Loma Prieta earthquake was around two hours before sunset. A syzygie, and alignment of three celestial bodies in a straight line, has been found to figure prominently in earthquakes (Lewis, 212).  This was true of the October 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. Mutable Moons figure prominently in earthquake charts (Owen, 2005); the Moon was in Gemini at the time of the Loma Prieta quake. It is also noteworthy how many correspondences there are between the Loma Prieta Earthquake horoscope and that of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake horoscope, and how prominently these two quake horoscopes figure into the horoscope of San Francisco itself. The Loma Prieta quake also figures into the Santa Cruz horoscope, the epicenter of the quake in the San Francisco Bay area. Solar arc contacts, secondary progressions, and transits also show strong correlations. The Sun, Mars and Mercury ingress charts just before the Loma Prieta earthquake also showed strong correlations. In the Sun ingress chart Mars, Mercury, and the Sun were conjunct, squaring Saturn, Neptune, and Uranus in Capricorn, and Jupiter and Moon and Chiron in Cancer, forming a potent cardinal T-square. This study of the Loma Prieta Earthquake illustrates the influence and correlations of many different astrological techniques.

  2. I was recommended this blog by way of my cousin. I’m not sure whether or not this put up is written by way of him as no one else recognise such exact approximately my difficulty. You are amazing! Thanks!

  3. It would seem to be important to keep watch with the planets and aspects that hint or shout that a major earthquake could be coming again to the San Francisco Bay area. With so many millions living right on the San Andreas Fault (I think it runs right through the peninsula south of SFO and am not knowledgeable about which fault or fault is a major factor for SFO) I think it could be a matter of saving lots of lives. But we can’t be “sure” with astrology so often when we wish we could. While I was living and working in Anchorage, AK the moment I got off the plane and was standing while talking to a clerk, the entire airport shook very hard and everyone just stood still in silence for about fifteen minutes. They told me they remembered the devastating quake of 1964. One day while I was working in the Alaska Psychiatric Institute a quake hit, and the walls of the room literally went out of square by a few feet in all directions! Another time I was in bed when a very strong quake hit Anchorage, throwing me out of bed and against the opposite wall. It’s amazing that we humans survive many of these sorts of phenomena and just keep going on the places that have been heartily shaken up before.

Great article, Cathy. I really appreciate all the history you included and explained. It’s helpful to know of all these references.
